Bali Wedding Photography Guide

Bali is one of the most photogenic places on earth to marry. Here’s how to make the most of it — timing, locations, coverage and tips.

Bali is built for beautiful photos

Few places on earth photograph a wedding as well as Bali. Limestone cliffs over the ocean, golden beaches at sunset, emerald rice terraces, and villas dripping with tropical greenery — the island hands you world-class backdrops everywhere you turn. But getting truly stunning images isn’t just luck; it comes down to a few deliberate choices around timing, location and coverage. Here’s how to make the most of it.

Timing is everything

The most important factor in your photos isn’t the camera — it’s the light, and that means timing. Bali’s midday sun is harsh and unflattering, while the golden hour around sunset bathes everything in warm, soft light. That’s why we schedule ceremonies for the late afternoon and deliberately protect two windows for portraits: the half hour right after the ceremony, and the period around sunset. Build your timeline around the light and your gallery will thank you.

Choosing your locations

The most photogenic Bali weddings often need the least decoration, because the setting does the work. The clifftops and glass chapels of Uluwatu are the island’s most dramatic backdrop; beaches in Seminyak and Jimbaran deliver classic sunset romance; and Ubud’s jungle and rice terraces offer something lush and unique. If incredible photos are a top priority, let that influence where you marry — some venues are simply more camera-ready than others.

How much coverage to book

Photography is priced by time and team size, not guest count, so the question is how much of your day you want documented. Most couples book at least 8 hours, spanning getting ready to the early reception. For larger weddings, or to capture the full party, 10+ hours or a second shooter is worth it. Book a photographer whose existing work you genuinely love — style is personal, and you want someone whose eye matches your taste.

Photo vs video

Photographs are non-negotiable; video is a beautiful extra. A cinematic film captures what stills can’t — your vows in your own voices, the movement of the day, the laughter and the atmosphere. If your budget stretches, many couples are deeply grateful they booked both. If you have to choose, prioritise an excellent photographer first, then add video if you can. Our vendor checklist covers assembling the full creative team.

We’ll connect you with the right team

Bali has a deep pool of wedding photographers and videographers, but quality and style vary enormously — and booking blind from overseas is risky. We match couples with photographers and film teams whose work fits their vision and budget, and we build the day’s timeline to give them the best possible light. Tell us the look you love, and we’ll help you capture a Bali wedding you’ll relive for the rest of your lives.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much wedding photography coverage do I need in Bali?

Most couples book at least 8 hours, covering getting ready through to the first part of the reception. For larger weddings or those wanting full reception coverage, 10+ hours or a second shooter is worth it. Coverage is priced by time and team size, not guest count.

What's the best time of day for Bali wedding photos?

Golden hour — the period around sunset — is unbeatable for warm, flattering light. The half hour right after your ceremony and the time around sunset are the most valuable for portraits, so we protect both in the timeline. Midday light is harsh and best avoided for key shots.

Should I book photography and video, or just photography?

Photography is essential; video is a wonderful addition. A film captures your vows, voices, movement and the atmosphere of the day in a way still images can't. If budget allows, many couples are very glad they booked both — though a great photographer should be the priority.

Where are the most photogenic places to get married in Bali?

Uluwatu's clifftops and glass chapels, beaches at sunset (Seminyak, Jimbaran), jungle and rice-terrace settings in Ubud, and styled private villas all photograph beautifully. The most striking backdrops often need the least decoration.
